Caroline Mbithi, one of the most adored and celebrated Kenyan gospel musicians based in Boston USA, successfully launched her new album, Destined, on Sunday September 23rd. The well- attended event took place at the Regis College auditorium in Weston city, Massachusetts.

The event drew large crowds from several African countries including Uganda, Tanzania, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Malawi. Thanks to the statewide publicity and excellent organization skills of the planning committee.

Carol has been doing the gospel circuit in Massachusetts for a long time. Her fame as an entertainer grew from her budding years in Kenya and blossomed when she became a sought-after performer in churches across the state. In the past, she has teamed up with other musicians from the greater East African region, most notably the Mwangaza Band based in Chelsea, Massachusetts.

The curtain raiser was a harvest of songs performed by various artists stretching from East to West Africa. Georgie, aka Ras Preach, belted out his gospel tunes in true hip-hop style to the amusement of the audience. Ola, from Nigeria was not left behind as he added to the flavor of the musical mix. Also in attendance was a dance troupe from Kansas City, Missouri and CSI from Kenya, among many others.

When Carol Mbithi finally made it on stage, the cheers were deafening as the audience went wild in anticipation. The songbird proceeded to sing her heart out to the delight of the full capacity crowd. It was a delight that most of the numbers were in English, which enabled the message to transcend language barriers. The applause was equally roof shattering after the attentive audience saw Carol’s video highlighting the pain and joy of making the CD.

After the show, EaUnited caught up with a beaming Carol who was evidently basking in the glory of her successful show for chitchat.  What gems do you have for someone hoping to venture into the gospel music arena? we enquired.  I would like to encourage any brother or sister to hang in there, pray and trust that God will see you through, she answered. It does not come on a silver platter but in the end you will get gold, she added. It is Carol’s hope that African gospel singers will rise up to another level and have their music featured in popular secular channels like BET.

Pastor Frank Mwembesa, who hails from Uganda and is currently based in Boston, gave a brief uplifting sermon and initiated an impromptu benefit to help offset the cost of hosting the event. Let us have the habit of supporting our own people who are showing signs of talent and hard work”, said Pastor Mwembesa, as people willingly lined up to make generous contributions.

As the new CD sold like hot samosas, excited fans posed for photographs with Carol and had their CDs autographed. A lady from Tanzania, dressed in an overflowing bright colored kanga, was overheard saying how good it felt to take a break from working double shifts and come out in style to support our own promising star. I wish such an occasion could be held more often. It would give us a life in this lonely country, quipped another.
