No land has Been issued To Egyptian Government-Obbo
Ministry Clarifies On Egypt Land Claims Of 2 Million Arces Of Uganda Land
By Eva Nabawanuka Mukasa
KAMPALA, Uganda, October 1-The Permanent Secreatary in the ministry of Lands Dennis Obbo has said that the ministry through its Land Office has not registered any interest, and nobody has sought to register any interest in the alleged land totaling the 2,076,000 acres (3,125 sq miles) as it appeared in the daily monitor of September 25th and 26th.
In a statement issued to the media, Obbo added that,”all Government Ministries and Institutions such as Agriculture, Foreign Affairs and Investment are not aware of such request and allocations of the land. "It is not true therefore to say that Uganda allocated to Egypt 2 million feddans of land in a number of places because no such transactions have been registered.”
He said it is the responsibility of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to secure land for investment, and UIA has also not handled any request for such land for any Egyptian Investors. No land has therefore been sold or leased freely as was reported.
He however noted that, it is necessary to recall that when the two Egyptian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture visited Uganda in June 2008, they paid a courtesy call on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Obbo said, the Egyptian Minister for Agriculture indicated that his Government could promote research and growing of wheat by local farmers where the soil and climate permit. No request for allocation of 2 million acres was made nor discussed,he added.
Later when President Hosni Mubarak visited Uganda, on 30th July 2008, the allocation of land for wheat growing was never discussed.
Obbo said that this same issue was raised in Parliament yesterday by Hon Betty N. Kamya ( FDC, Lubaga North).
He added that, “Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development is responsible for ensuring Land Tenure Security in Uganda. The Ministry is also responsible for registering all land interests.
