Raila raps his way to presidential campaigns

By David Odongo and Jelimo Chelagat, posted July 4, 2012

Many comedians have made an art out of making fun of politicians, and Raila Odinga is no exception.

Buni Media, the company that produces the XYZ Show has uploaded a hilarious music video on YouTube.

The video, starring Raila and his cronies shows the prime minister dressed youthfully, adorned with bling as he raps over beats from Dr Dre's 2001 smash hit ‘Still Dre’.

In the original song, Dre asserts his greatness taunting those who think he has lost it.

The remix follows suit with Raila countering those who claim he has lost popularity after numerous defections from his ODM party.

Unacampaign and there is not much change…still getting getting kuras in the Steadman’s Poll” (You campaign, and there is still not much change... I’m still getting votes in the Steadman’s Poll.)

For people who loved Dr. Dre’s single, the Raila remix will have you rolling down with laughter as the premier raps the same lyrics with Dr Dre, changing some words to suit the Kenyan political scene.

Packed with comical punch lines, the clip makes allusions to political happenings past and present. “Grand coalition, teargas…Nyayo torture chambers, I’m the oldest member…”

Unbwogable

Backed with hallelujahs from Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Raila continues to assert that he is unbwogable (invincible).

In just over a week, the clip has gotten over 21,000 clicks. XYZ’s mixture of political satire and parody is gaining a sizable following while showcasing Kenyan creativity.

Projects like this bring laughter into our lives, especially during these hard economic times. We have to salute the Reddikyulas who were the first comedy group to ‘cross the line’ and make fun of powerful politicians during their shows. Since then, comedians have been been using political satire to brighten Kenyan's lives.
