The ever-active Kenyan Christians Community Abroad, Boston Chapter, held its annual Christmas Cantata event on Sunday December 9th at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Medford, Massachusetts.
Scores of Christian faithful including children and youth showed up and participated in praise and worship, exchanging gifts and reading the word from the Holy bible. They also feasted on well-prepared and delicious Kenyan dishes, which included the ever-popular chapati, mukimo and nyama choma.
Children at the event were mesmerized when they were treated to one of their most popular dishes, McDonald’s kids’ meal. It comes in a package complete with french-fries, cheeseburger, apple juice and a toy. It was like a dream come true for the children as they looked forward to when Santa will come down the chimney with toys and gifts on Christmas day.
Ms Brenda Ngure, event leader and chairperson of Kenyan Christians Abroad asked Kenyan Christians in America to be mindful of each other. “Let us be concerned with those among us who are going through hard times. Let us pray for them and assist them with their needs”, Brenda pleaded.
The hall was impeccably decorated with Christmas ornaments and a beautiful well-lit Christmas tree that stood majestically at the front. Amid the socializing, several Kenyans were recognized for various achievements such as writing books and launching CDs. DJ Fresh, a contemporary Christian DJ, who does his gig around Boston, entertained the Christians with their most loved hits. He also provided the background music for a dancing competition where women dressed in authentic African attire competed strongly. Mrs. Peninah Idahen won the competition by unanimous decision of the judges, who were the crowd-at-large.
The Cantata set the Christmas mood in high gear. Kenyan faithful are now ready to celebrate the actual Christmas day on December 25th. However, since it falls on a Tuesday, some will be forced to make a difficult choice between going to work for double pay or staying home with family and friends.
